General

1. What type of language examinations do you offer?

We hold examinations for translators, editors, verbatim reporters, interpreters, and proofreaders. Other language examinations may also be offered based on the needs of the Organization. Check our web page for the examinations currently on offer.

2. Which languages do you service?

The United Nations has language services for all 6 official languages, which are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

3. Which are the working languages of the United Nations?

EEnglish and French are the working languages of the Secretariat. Some of the other official languages may also be working languages in the Regional Commissions.

Application process

1. When will the next Arabic/ English… examination for translators/ editors… be held?

Language examinations are held only when the previous roster of candidates has been exhausted or is about to be exhausted and there is a foreseeable need for new recruitments. The frequency of language examinations depends on the length of the previous roster and the number of vacancies expected in the relevant service. Some language examinations are held every year or so as there are many projected vacancies; others are held at longer intervals. Check our website on a regular basis and apply only if you qualify for the ones advertised. Examinations are announced at least 6 weeks before the deadline for applications.

2. I want to apply for a language examination but I can see that you just held one. Can I send you my application so that you can keep it on file for the next exam?

No. We will only consider applications that are submitted within the application period. Keep checking the website and apply the next time you see an open application period for the examination you are interested in. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered or acknowledged.

3. I see that there will be an English/French interpreters/translators… exam coming up next year. Can I send you the application now?

No, we do not accept applications before the application period is open. The list of upcoming examinations is simply an indication of what we are planning to hold next year so that you can make a point of checking our website for the relevant announcement at the right time. Changes of schedule are possible and you are still advised to check our website every month for updates or changes.

4. I want to apply for a United Nations language examination but I see that you have to be 56 years old or under in order to qualify. Why do you have an age limit for language examinations?

The United Nations has a mandatory retirement age of 62. It is hoped that recruited candidates will stay 5 years in a language post and it typically takes about a year from start to finish to conclude an examination. Therefore 56 is the maximum age we could consider for a permanent post.

5. Is there a nationality requirement for language positions?

No. Language posts are not subject to geographical distribution, so candidates of any nationality recognized by the United Nations can apply for these examinations.

6. How many languages do you normally have to know in order to apply for a language post?

For most language positions, the language of the examination must be your main language (the language in which you are best able to work). This is also usually the language in which you were taught throughout your university education. In addition to this language you must also have an excellent knowledge of at least two other official languages of the United Nations. Exceptions to this general rule may apply. Please check the convocation for the examination you are interested in to see the specific language eligibility requirements.

Sample examinations

1. Can I get a sample of the examination I am interested in so that I can prepare for the exam?

Sample examinations may be provided at the time we announce the examination and the application period opens. Since there may be changes in exam formats and the sample examination is meant to be only an indicator of the actual examination advertised, we do not provide sample examinations in advance prior to the announcement.

2. I do not see a sample examination for the examination I am applying for. Can I get it?

The Board of Examiners decides whether to release a sample for each examination. If the sample is not available for this exam, it means that the Board has decided not to make past papers available. Please do not request it.

3. I do not see a sample paper for one of the parts of the examination. Can I get it?

The Board may decide not to provide a sample for all parts of the examination. If it is not on the website, it means it is not available. Please do not request it.

Convocation

1. If I am convoked for a language examination, where will the examination centres be located?

Candidates are convoked to the United Nations examination centre closest to where they are residing at the time of the examination. For logistic and financial reasons, only a limited number of examination centres are open and these are selected taking into consideration the availability of facilities and the number of convoked candidates who live in proximity to the centre. Indications about possible exam locations may be found in the specific exam announcements.

2. Does the United Nations pay for travel to the written examination centre?

The United Nations will not reimburse for travel in connection with the convocation to the written examination. If, however, you are successful in the written examination the United Nations will reimburse the costs of travel to the interview.

3. Is there a fee to apply or to take the examination?

No, the United Nations does not charge any fee for its examinations.

Results of the examination

1. I have taken an examination and I want to find out if I passed. Can you tell me?

On our web page, right below the title of each of the examinations currently in progress, we indicate the stage that the examination is at (convocation to written exam, correction stage, interview, etc.) Check the status of the examination first. If it is in the convocation to the interview stage, all candidates will be receiving a letter from us shortly with the examination results. Candidates convoked to the interview will also be contacted by phone or email.

2. Where can I expect to be posted if I pass a language examination?

Language positions exist in all the main duty stations and in the headquarters of the regional commissions: New York, Geneva, Vienna, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Beirut and Santiago de Chile.

Salary and Benefits (P2 NCRE)

For a staff member without dependents, the annual starting salary will normally be between US$43,662 and US$55,924 net of income tax. In addition, staff members are entitled to a post adjustment, which varies according to the cost of living of each duty station (for example, it is currently between US$26,983 and US$34,561 per year in New York). For a staff member with dependents, the annual starting salary will be between US$46,549 and US$59,967. (In New York, the post adjustment for staff members with dependents is currently between US$28,767 and US$37,060.)

In addition, staff members are entitled to the following benefits:

(a) Dependency benefits: at present, US$ 1,780 per year for each eligible child;

(b) Participation in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund. The staff member contributes 7.9% of the pensionable remuneration and the United Nations contributes twice this rate. The Pension Fund provides disability, retirement and survivors’ benefits as well as lump sum withdrawals;

(c) Medical and dental insurance contribution. The United Nations contributes the greater portion of the premiums, which depend on the plan selected and on the family status. As an example, currently at Headquarters, the staff member can pay between 2.63% and 8.29% of his/her "medical net" salary (gross salary less staff assessment plus some allowances).

Staff members who are assigned to a duty station which is not in their home country are also entitled to:

(a) Education grant and education grant travel per scholastic year for each eligible dependent child;

(b)Home leave to their country of nationality every two years, with the travel expenses of the staff member and his or her spouse and eligible dependent children paid by the United Nations. The first home leave is granted only if the staff member's service is expected to continue at least six months beyond the initial two-year appointment.

Staff members who are internationally recruited to the duty station may also be entitled to:

(a) Assignment grant at the time of recruitment and repatriation grant upon separation. The assignment grant is based on the Daily Subsistence Allowance rate set for each duty station. The repatriation grant can be as high as 58% of the quoted net salary depending on the length of continuous service away from the home country and family status;

(b) Removal of household effects, depending on the duty station. Up to 8,150 kilograms are allowed for the removal of household effects;

(c) Rental subsidy of up to 40% of the actual rent if the rent exceeds a specified percentage of the staff member’s emoluments and if the rent falls within reasonable maximum rent levels.

The determination of salary of individual successful candidates is based on their level of academic qualifications and the length of their relevant professional experience.

UN staff members are entitled to 30 days of paid leave a year. In addition, staff is also eligible for other leave entitlements such as 16 weeks of maternity leave as well as paternity, family, adoption, sickness and sabbatical leave.

A: No, you are not qualified to apply for this exam. There is no exception. Please check our site again in June of next year to see if your country is listed. You may also check the following site http://www.un.org/Depts/OHRM/ for other opportunities.

Q: I have more than one nationality. Am I qualified to apply?
A: Only if one or more of your nationalities is listed.

Q: I am a resident alien and/or I have applied to become a citizen in one of the countries listed on the web site. Am I qualified to apply?
A: No. You must have the citizenship at the time of application, not later.

Q: Why is the programme only open to nationals of these countries?
A: We are mandated by the various resolutions of the UN General Assembly to increase the number of professional staff from countries that are not represented or are not adequately represented in the UN Secretariat. Therefore, the programme is open to these priority member states.

Q: How many nationals from my country will be selected through this process and be offered a post?
A: There is no preset number; the number depends on the achievement of candidates in this competitive process.

Age:
Q: I will be 33 years old on 31 December of the year of the exam. Can I apply?
A: No, you cannot apply because you must be 32 years old or younger as of 31 December of the year of the exam. There is no exception (even for one day) to the age requirement to apply for the National Competitive Examination, which is held for recruiting professionals for junior posts. However, with the necessary qualification, you may apply for more senior posts which do not bear age requirements. You may find specific requirements for these posts by visiting www.un.org/Depts/OHRM/.

University degree:
Q: I will be obtaining my B.A. in June of next year. Can I apply?
A: In order to be eligible, you must have a degree relevant to the occupational group at the time you are submitting your application. If you are obtaining your degree by 31 January of the year of the exam, we will consider your application. However, if you are obtaining your degree beyond that, you will have to apply next time.

Q: I will be obtaining my Master's degree in June of next year. I already have a B.A. Am I eligible?
A: In order to be eligible, you must have a degree relevant to the occupational group at the time you are submitting your application. However, we may consider your application if you are obtaining your degree by 31 January of the year of the exam. Also, if you are currently pursuing a second university degree, it is possible that you may qualify on the basis of your first university degree (BA or equivalent), provided it is relevant to the occupational group you are applying in. For instance, if you are expecting to complete your Law degree in June of next year but already have a B.A. in Library, you are eligible to apply for the exam in Library (provided an exam is offered next year in Library); if you are expecting to complete your Law degree in June of next year but already have a B.A. in gymnastic, you are not eligible because gymnastic is not an acceptable academic field for any of the UN occupational groups.

In submitting your application, please make sure that you include a transcript or a list of relevant courses taken. This will facilitate the review of your application by the Board. Once the Board makes its decision, the decision is final and not subject to appeal.

P-2/P-3 exam:
Q: What do you mean by "P-2" and "P-3" levels?
A: These are two of the levels used to classify professional posts at the United Nations. P-2 level is at the entry level and do not normally require any extensive experience. P-2 permanent posts are filled exclusively through competitive examinations. P-3 level is the next professional level and requires a higher level of expertise acquired through relevant professional experience in a given field. P-3 posts are normally filled through competitive examinations but can be filled through internal promotions and other means.

Q: Is there any NCRE exam announced for the P-3 level?
A: There is no NCRE exam at the P-3 level scheduled presently. The P-3 exams are offered only when specific needs arise. Please check our site frequently for updates.

Written exam:
Q: What kind of reference materials could I use to prepare for the written exams?
A: The reading materials mentioned in the sample questions are merely suggestions and not a requirement. You may want to read through newspaper, journals and books you used while you were studying at the university and any other publication which you feel may be useful.

Q: I will be resident abroad at the time of the written exam. Can I take the exam in a local university or in my consulate?
A: No. The exams are administered only in a limited number of exam centres, under the supervision of a United Nations official. On request, at the time of the application or at least 6 weeks before the exam, we will attempt to convoke you to the location closest to your residence abroad.

Q: Does the United Nations cover my travel expenses to take the exam?
A: No, the United Nations does not cover any cost (travel, subsistence allowance or stipend, insurance, etc.) incurred in taking the written exam. However, for candidates invited back to the interview, the United Nations will cover the cost of travel and subsistence allowance in accordance with its rules.

Q: I have an appointment that I cannot miss on the day of the exam. Can I take the exam earlier or later on that day or any time before or after the announced exam date?
A: No. All candidates must start and remain until the end of the exam according to the specific schedule of their exam centre. There is no makeup exam; there are no exceptions, not even for medical reasons.

Q: Can I arrive late to the exam?
A: Arriving late is strongly discouraged, as it will disturb others and you will miss the instructions read at the start of the exam. In the event that you are delayed, you will be admitted up to thirty minutes after the starting time. You will not receive extra time if you arrive late.

Q: I have a very poor handwriting, so can I use a typewriter or a computer?
A: No. It would make the administration of the exam too complex. It would also raise confidentiality and security issues.

Q: What can I bring to the exam centre? Is there a dress code to take the exam? What is not allowed in the exam centre?
A: Please bring black pens, pencils, highlight pens, calculator, ruler, your convocation document, and a picture ID indicating your nationality (passport, citizenship card, etc.). You may also bring some light food (candies, chocolate, etc.) and refreshments which will not distract others in the room. Smoking is discouraged, but sometimes permitted, depending on the location. There is no dress code to participate in the exam. However, some exam rooms might be rather cool or warm. Be prepared!

Do not bring cellular phones, dictionaries, electronic dictionaries, portable computers, reference materials, or draft paper/scrap paper. Should you bring any of these items, you will be required to leave them in another room.

Q: I was convoked to take last year's exam, but I did not take it. May I take this year's exam?
A: In order to take this year's exam you must submit a new application, meet all requirements (nationality, age, occupational group), be selected by the Board and convoked to an exam centre.

Q: I took the last national exam in February. When can I expect the results and how will I be notified?
A: The marking of the written exam is normally completed between June and November following the exam depending on the occupational group. Detailed progress for each occupational group is given on our Internet site beginning in July. All candidates are notified in writing by airmail at their last updated address. The application numbers of candidates convoked to the interview are also published on our Internet site. The interview usually takes place one to two months after the completion of the marking of the written exam.

Q: Are P-2 posts fixed-term contracts? Do they need to be renewed?
A: The purpose of the National Competitive Recruitment Examination is to recruit people for career posts at the Secretariat. Recruits will initially go through a two-year probationary period followed by conversion into continuing contracts, provided their performance is satisfactory. They are expected to stay on to make a career with the Secretariat as they move on to higher ranks, such as P-3 and then to P-4, etc. You will not be required to take another competitive exam to become a P-3, P-4, etc., but you will have to apply for a vacant post at that level.

Q: Would I be stuck in the same position after I am recruited?
A: The Organization strongly encourages mobility within and across duty stations and functions. Under the new Managed Reassignment Programme, all P-2 recruits are expected to work in at least two different functions within their first five years of service. After two years in their initial assignment, they will move to a second function within the same or a different department, duty station or occupational group. The Office of Human Resources Management will present the P-2 staff available posts for the upcoming reassignment exercise.

1. This examination is open to men and women who are nationals of the member states participating in the 2009 National Competitive Recruitment Examination. Qualified women are particularly encouraged to apply.

2. Applicants should hold at least a first-level university degree relevant to the discipline in which they would like to take the examination. Furthermore, applicants should not be more than 32 years old on 31 December 2009 (should be born on 1 January 1977 or after). Fluency in either English or French is required.

In instances where a large number of applications are received by the Board of Examiners (more than 40 per discipline in a given country), the Board reserves the right to admit to the examination only the most qualified candidates based on a review of the qualifications which are over and above the minimum entrance criteria set out in paragraphs 4 and 5. These include, but are not limited to, advanced university degrees, diplomas or certificates; knowledge of additional official languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish); a broader spectrum of work experience or any works published.

1.2 Phase-II: On-campus On-line Counselling

Eligible candidates will be required to report at specified counselling centres (Table 6) in accordance with their state of eligibility, which will be displayed on computer screen during Phase-I. The Phase-II counselling will be completed in one day. However, the candidates are advised to come prepared to stay for two days, if required, to meet any contingency. They can download the admission letter from a place of their convenience.

(a) The Counselling Procedure

On the scheduled (AIR based) counselling date (Table 4), the candidates will report to the document verification counters for verification of their Certificates and Admit Card. Candidates are required to bring all certificates in original along with one photocopy of each and four copies of their photograph identical to the one pasted on the AIEEE 2008 application form. If the original certificates are not in English, duly certified English version / translation of such certificates will be required.
Thereafter, the candidates will proceed to fee deposit counters. Initial Fee deposit of Rs. 15,000/- for OP and OBC candidates and Rs. 5,000/- for SC / ST candidates will be collected at the computerized fee counters. The deposit is to be made through a demand draft in favour of CCB payable at Allahabad . This amount will be transferred to the allotted institution and adjusted in the fee to be deposited there.
Discrepancies related to category, sub-category, gender and state of eligibility in the computer record generated on the basis of AIEEE 2008 application form earlier submitted by the candidate to CBSE will be rectified by the competent authority at the counselling centre on the basis of the original certificates. Candidates must give their address for correspondence, where the cheques for refund of Initial Fee deposit may be sent, if required. A printout of the duly authenticated modified record will be given to the candidate.
Any change in the candidate’s name and father’s name shall not be permitted under any circumstances.
Candidates must ensure in their own interest, that their state of eligibility, category, sub-category and gender are mentioned correctly on the printout given to them after verification.
After verification of certificates and depositing the Initial Fee, the candidates will be required to exercise their final choices of seats On-line by using Form 1 to indicate the choices of institutions with branch in order of their preference.
The status of the available seats will be displayed for the guidance of candidates.
Form 1 will show the choices last submitted during Off-campus counselling. During On-campus counselling candidates are free to change these choices as they may like.
In order to be considered for the ‘dropout’ seats, candidates must also submit Form 2 on-line indicating their choices for institutions only. For the candidates who failed to get an ‘offered’ seat against Form 1, the Form 2 will be processed for allotment of the institution for admission without branch. The branch will be allotted later by the institution where admitted with due consideration of merit among the students joining it.
After filling the choices through ‘Form 1’ and / or ‘Form 2’, the candidate must get the choices locked. Candidate must ensure in their own interest that the choices have been locked. If the choices have not been locked, the FORM 1 and FORM 2 WILL NOT BE PROCESSED.
After locking of the choices, the candidates will collect two copies of printouts for each of the choice forms submitted by them. Both copies are to be signed by the candidate and the competent authority at the counselling centre. The same must be verified by the candidate and one copy of each of Form 1 and Form 2 returned to the authorized person at the counselling centre.

(b) Allotment Letter

The choices submitted through Form 1 on the scheduled date of counselling will be processed centrally late in the evening and the list of candidates who would be allotted an institution along with a branch for admission will be displayed on our website. The candidates are required to download the allotment letter from the website www.ccb.nic.in from a place of their convenience. In case of any difficulty in downloading the allotment letter they can contact the counselling centre.

(c) Reporting at PIs or Remote Reporting (for IIITs, IIITM and IIITDM only) at Designated Counselling Centre

For admission, the successful candidates are to report to the allotted institution during the period July 5-20, 2008 for ‘offered’ seats, failing which their allotment will be cancelled. The seats thus falling vacant will be considered as ‘dropout’ seats for which allotment will be made on the basis of Form 2.

A facility of Remote Reporting has been introduced at the Counselling Centres for the benefit of the candidates selected only in NITs / IIITs / IIITM. The candidates may use this facility under emergent conditions.

(d) Multiple Allotment

The candidates who have been selected both in Engineering and Architecture disciplines will be given option to retain any one allotment of their choice. The candidates will be required to withdraw the other allotment and surrender the corresponding allotment letter.

1.3 Allotment Against Dropout Seats

1. The choices submitted through Form 2 for ‘dropout’ seats will be processed and list of candidates who would be allotted an institution against ‘dropout’ seats on the basis of AIR for each category will be displayed on website on July 23, 2008 . These candidates will be required to directly report at the allotted institution for admission during July 23-28, 2008 (failing which their allotment will be cancelled).

2. No allotment letter will be given at the Counselling Centres for allotment against ‘dropout’ seats. The candidates have to directly report to the allotted institutions on the basis of allotment results as displayed on the CCB website.

3. The allotment of the branches to the candidates admitted to various PIs against ‘dropout’ seats will be made during July 28-30, 2008 by the allotted Institutions.

4. With a view to minimize the number of ‘dropout’ and ‘un-availed’ seats, a Second Round of centralised counselling has been introduced.

2. Second Round of Counselling

Only those registered candidates who had neither been allotted seats nor withdrawn will be allowed to participate in the Second Round of Counselling during August 2 - 4, 2008 . For this, the candidates will not be required to be present physically at the Counselling Centres. They can fill their choices On-line from a place of their convenience. The choice filling form will be similar to Form 1 but without State specific seats as these seats will be converted to All India Seats wherever applicable.

COUNSELLING PROCEDURE

The counselling procedure is divided into two stages, Main Counselling and Second Round of Counselling.

1.Main Counselling:

The main counselling procedure is divided in two phases:

Phase-I: Off-campus On-line Counselling (June 23 - June 29, 2008 )

Phase-II: On-campus On-line Counselling (July 4 - July 13, 2008 )

The detailed procedure is described below:

1.1 Phase-I: Off-campus On-line Counselling

During this phase, candidates found eligible for counselling by CBSE, on the basis of AIEEE-2008 results are required to exercise their initial choices of branches and institutions by filling Form 1 through Internet (www.ccb.nic.in) from places of their convenience. The candidates may contact the nearby PI for availing the Internet facility free of charge.
For Off-campus counselling a candidate has to log on to the website www.ccb.nic.in and click on “off-campus counselling”.
Engineering and Architecture streams will appear on the computer screen; click on the desired stream.
Register as a new candidate by clicking on “New candidate!! Register here” link. Read the instructions given on the screen and click on “Register”.
The candidate is required to enter the details as printed in the Admit Card.
The procedure for exercising choices or seeking other information is menu-driven. It guides the candidates through appropriate messages on the computer screen.
Information relating to institutions, disciplines (Engineering / Technology and Architecture / Planning), branches (e.g., Electronics Engineering, Computer Science, etc.) and categories (OP, OBC, SC, ST, etc.) will be available through each relevant dropdown menu for the purpose of exercising choices as well as for a feel of their competitive standing for their preferred choices among the logged-in candidates.
The state of eligibility will automatically appear on the screen as per the data filled by the candidate in AIEEE-2008 application form. Candidate will not be allowed to change his / her state of eligibility during Off-campus counselling. The state code of eligibility, however, can be changed, only if it is wrongly mentioned, during the On-campus counselling in the presence of a counselling official after proper verification.
The name of counselling centre based on state of eligibility will also be displayed on computer screen during Phase-I.
The candidates are permitted, if they so desire, to change or re-order their choices, delete earlier choices and add new choices any number of times based on the information which will appear on the computer screen. The candidates are free to consult their parents, teachers, friends and others for advice during Phase-I.
The Off-campus counselling will facilitate the selection of the most appropriate discipline, institution and branch at candidate’s rank and in their categories for submitting their final choices during On-campus counselling.
Choices will be processed and indicative seat allocation will be put on the web at frequent intervals. The dates of next update of indicative seat allocation will be displayed on the website.
Form-2 (optional) can also be filled during Off-campus counselling.
Candidates must fill their address for correspondence during the Off-campus counselling. The same address will be used for future communication and sending the refund, if any.
